About the

Alter International
Horse Summit

The Alter International Horse Summit – AIHS – is a project with unique outlines in Portugal and in Europe. Its main goal is to analyse and debate all subjects relating to the equestrian world. The areas included in this project are very heterogeneous and range from economics, research and treatment, competition, transport, tourism to entrepreneurship.

This initiative comes from Portugal, the country with the oldest saddle horse in the world – the Purebred Lusitano – and Alter – the birthplace of the Alter Real Horse, one of the most awarded purebred strains ever. AIHS also has several parallel initiatives running throughout the year, such as the #AIHSTechForHorses International Awards and Equine Veterinary Research. The culmination of all this work will take place in Alter do Chão, on a date to be announced soon.

Since its starts, AIHS wants to become one of the largest and most prestigious equestrian networks in Europe. To this end, it has more than two dozen institutional, associative, media and investor partners. Beginning in the 18th century, when King João V set up the Alter Real Stud Farm, Alter do Chão has been a benchmark in the national and international equestrian panorama. This is why one of AIHS’s main goals is to make Alter do Chão a world renowned debating center for the issues and challenges affecting the equestrian world, in what is the home to the unmatched Alter Real Lusitano Horse.

The Purebred Lusitano and Alter-Real

The Purebred Lusitano is the most noble of the four breeds of Portuguese horses. It is considered to be the oldest riding horse in the world and is therefore the source of what we now know as Equitation, as it has been ridden for several thousand years. The Alter Real is descended from the Purebred Lusitano bloodline and is as old as the Alter Real Stud Farm itself, which was opened in the mid-18th century. The Alter Real is known worldwide and has won awards for its incomparable skills in Equestrian Arts, particularly Dressage, Working Equitation and Pulling Carriages. It is also an extremely docile horse, and therefore much appreciated for entertainment activities and riding. This is why the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art uses only Alter Real Lusitanos from the Alter Real Stud Farm. Know more about the Real Lusitanos on the website APSL.

O QUE É?

Alter International
Horse Summit

The Alter International Horse Summit – AIHS – is a unique project in Portugal and in Europe. Its aim is to study, look at and discuss the Horse Economy in all of its forms. Throughout the year there several simultaneous activities will take place leading to a an annual gathering of the AIHS to be held in Alter do Chão in 2020. This gathering will bring together a large number of national and international experts and stakeholders at a summit to discuss topics directly and indirectly related to the equestrian world, such as the Socioeconomic Impact of the Horse, Tourism, Research and Health, Entrepreneurship, Competition and Technology. Among the AIHS partners are companies, associations, the media and enablers that, from the outset, believed in the project and became part of it.

Since the 18th century, when King João V set up the now innovative Alter Real Stud Farm, Alter do Chão has been a benchmark in the national and international equestrian panorama. This is why one of the main goals of the AIHS is to make Alter do Chão a national and international centre of debate for the issues and challenges affecting the equestrian world, in what is the home to the peerless Alter Real Lusitano Horse.

By attracting new businesses and reinforcing existing ones, the AIHS will be a major boost to the local economy as well.

In addition to these discussion forums, Alter do Chão will also be hosting other activities during this period, including rides in horse-drawn carriages, an exhibition of horses from a number of national stud farms, horse shows, cultural events, food tasting and night-time entertainment.
